The International Schools Math Teachers Foundation math competition held at Webster Vienna included 220 competitors from 42 international schools in Europe and Asia.

Webster University’s Vienna campus was host to an international mathematics competition for students age 14-16 during the weekend of March 13-15. The competition was organized by the International Schools Math Teachers Foundation (ISMTF), which holds three such competitions for different age groups per year. The founder of ISMTF is Webster Vienna professor and math program coordinator Ibrahim Wazir.

In addition to testing, the event included a competition where randomly composed teams conducted a “mathematical chase” throughout Vienna’s city center, solving six problems and graph theory in the process.

The competitions are usually held at schools, but this event was held in a university environment at Webster Vienna’s Palais Wenkheim for the first time.

Participants included 220 competitors accompanied by 65 teachers from 42 different international schools from Europe and Asia. Upon arrival on campus on Saturday, everyone received a Webster Vienna goodie bag prepared by the Admissions department, as well as t-shirts, which were partly funded by Casio.

A highlight of the weekend was the Sunday chase: 22 randomly selected teams with 10 participants from different schools, each with 2 accompanying teachers, conducted a mathematical chase throughout Vienna’s city center. Equipped with only a map of the inner city, a list of seven locations (from St. Stephan’s Cathedral to the opera house) and two hours of time, the teams had to solve six problems, including graph theory. The intense weekend was ended with an award ceremony in the atrium.

The competition was a huge success, not least of all thanks to the support from the many Webster Vienna Private University staff members and students who came and helped. Thanks also to photographer Tomáš Chrapčiak from the Webster photo society, who gave up his spare time to cover the event.
