Members of the Cuban hip hop duo, Obsesión, Magia Lopez and Alexey Rodriguez, spoke to an overflow crowd Oct. 4 in the Emerson Library conference room as part of the artist lecture and forum on hip hop and Afro-Cuban culture.

The event was sponsored by the Center for International Education, Global Education Cohort and Latin American Studies.

Through an interpreter, they shared their experiences and struggles to make music in the changing cultural atmosphere in Cuba. Obsesión shared with the crowd their two music videos, Esta es mi mama (This is My Mom) and Los pelos (Hair).

In the films, the audience got a chance to see how the duo strives to make music that is culturally relevant and uplifting. This was especially evident a slide shown with the translated lyrics of their song Los pelos.

Following their presentation, the floor was opened for audience questions and discussion.

Obsesión performed live in Marletto’s Marketplace at 7 p.m. where Cuban-inspired dishes were on the dinner menu in honor of their visit to campus.
