RecycleMania Tournament: Week Three Results, Freecycle Event March 8

| March 6, 2013

Webster University Recyling team members sort and load discarded paint and paint containers for proper disposal. Paint that is improperly disposed can contaminate the air, soil and ground water, where eventually these harmful elements will work their way into the food chain.

The third week of the Webster University RecycleMania competition yielded a campus-wide 14, 109 pounds of recycled materials. Total organic compost was 520 pounds and waste totaled 15, 705 pounds. Five weeks remain in the RecycleMania tournament. Be mindful of the waste you’re generating, recycle as much as you can, and help Webster win a RecycleMania trophy!

Week Three Rankings

All recyclable items may be co-mingled in the blue single-stream bins around the Webster University campus.

Webster University has jumped from 63rd place last week to currently 52nd in the national Grand Champion category out of 208 schools; and 166th in the Gorilla Prize category and 234th in the Per Capita Classic out of 311 schools. Webster’s cumulative Greenhouse Gas reductions (based on EPA’s Waste Reduction Model) equal 83 metric tons of CO2 equivalent, or 16 cars off the road, or the energy consumption of 7 households.

Freecycle Friday

In support of recycling and waste reduction efforts, Webster University Recycling is hosting a Free Swap recycling event on Friday, March 8 in the Sunnen Lounge from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Bring any gently used, unwanted items (anything from clothing, books, and home ware to electronics and appliances) and swap them for something you might need, or just come to browse the selection.

Swapping keeps perfectly usable items out of landfills and reduces waste by keeping items in the community. Any items left at the end of the event will be donated to a local Goodwill store.

RecycleMania Facebook Competition

The recycling program continues to host its weekly contest on the Webster University Recycling Facebook page until the end of RecycleMania on March 31. Those who share the “RecycleMania Standings” post — uploaded at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays — by Friday of each week will be entered into a drawing to win great prizes. Prizes include metal water bottles, reusable tote bags, bicycle accessories, and recycling t-shirts.

RecycleMania is a contest with more than 600 colleges and universities competing to recycle the most material on their campuses. This year, Webster added reporting for two waste stream categories: organics and electronics. The competition lasts from Feb. 1 to March 31, 2013.
