Webster University baseball: Ranked 8th in D-III

Coaches ranked Webster 8th in the nation after its first World Series trip.

The Webster University baseball team leaped from being unranked in the final regular season top 30 poll to being ranked eighth nationally in the American Baseball Coaches Association’s final poll of the 2012 season.

The NCAA Division III Gorloks’ lofty ranking came on the heels of the team’s 5-2 record in the NCAA Tournament, including a 4-0 sweep of the Millington Regional and its first-ever trip to the NCAA D-III World Series.

In its post-season play, Webster knocked off a number of ranked opponents, including Birmingham-Southern College (#6) twice, Kean University (#11), DePauw University (#22), and Washington University (#27). Webster had near-misses against Marietta College and Wheaton College, who finished 1-2 in the final poll.

Despite going two and out in the World Series, and their second defeat at the hands of the Gorloks, Kean University still managed to finish sixth in the final voting, ahead of Webster. Birmingham-Southern, despite two losses to Webster, finished strong as well, only dropping three places to 9th in the final poll.

The ranking is the highest ever for the Webster baseball team. Visit the Webster Athletics site for the full top 10, or see the complete final poll in this PDF file.
