The Centennial Committee congratulates music composition student Christopher Poetz, winner of the contest to create the new Webster University alma mater.

Poetz conducted the vocal performance of the new Webster University alma mater on April 23.

Webster University’s new alma mater, “Webster U. You Are Our Home,” was performed publicly for the first time on April 23. Members of the Webster community filled the Thompson Music Building Recital Hall for its debut performance, where the first verse was played.

Department of Music chair Jeffrey Carter, who led this spring’s contest, welcomed attendees before introducing President Elizabeth (Beth) J. Stroble.

Stroble spoke of the desire for a new alma mater that represents the University’s mission in its second century, and congratulated Webster student Christopher Poetz as winner of the alma mater contest for his composition. Poetz’s winning composition was selected based upon the overall appropriateness of the lyrics and music, with particular attention to how the lyrics reflect Webster’s mission, vision and values.

“I am deeply honored that my alma mater submission has been chosen to represent Webster University for the next 100 years!” said Poetz. “I am forever grateful for everything that Webster University has done for me, so it is nice to be able to give something back.”

Stroble presented Poetz with a Centennial coin and the contest’s $2,500 prize. Poetz then conducted the assembled voice students in a performance of the first verse of “Webster U. You Are Our Home.”

The full song will be performed in its entirety at Commencement on Saturday, May 9.
