Message from the Provost

| March 30, 2015

The following message was distributed to Webster St. Louis area part-time faculty members March 30.

To all Faculty and Staff:

Late Friday, we received notice that the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) filed a petition with the NLRB to represent certain Adjunct Faculty members teaching at Webster University’s St. Louis area campuses.

This is the first in several steps necessary for an election to determine whether SEIU becomes the sole representative for Adjunct Faculty in all matters of employment. Webster University fully recognizes and respects the rights of our Adjunct Faculty colleagues to seek union representation.

In the days ahead, the University will work with the NLRB to ensure all of the Adjunct Faculty affected will have an opportunity to vote, and that they are fully informed regarding the details of any future election and the facts surrounding unionization before the vote. At this time it is not known who might ultimately be eligible to vote or when such a vote might occur.

As an institution of higher learning, we fully respect the free exchange of knowledge and information. There are also many questions that still need to be answered. Accordingly, the University intends to present its point of view fairly and transparently at as this issue unfolds in the weeks ahead. If you have any questions, feel free to email them to
