The visit provided hands-on experience with quality control and inventory management.

To get a deeper look inside the world of international manufacturing, graduate students at Webster University Thailand recently went straight to the belly.

Jelly Belly Candy Company, that is.

Faculty member Tim Malloy arranged the visit with gracious Jelly Belly executives as part of the operations management class in the Webster University MBA program offered through the George Herbert Walker School of Business & Technology.

Originally founded in 1869 as the Goelitz Confectionery Company, Jelly Belly is a major international manufacturer headquartered in Oakland, California, with a 50,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Rayong, Thailand, opened in 2008.

The on-site visit helped connect theory with practice, providing Webster students hands-on experience with production and quality control management at a globally renowned company. The students also experienced real-world aspects of inventory management and international brand licensing.

The MBA students heard insights from company executives, including the U.S.-based company’s chairman and its Thailand operations leaders.

Hands-on Guidance from Company Executives

The factory tour was led by Don Helton, general manager of the Jelly Belly Candy Company Thailand.

The students heard insights into the operations of a manufacturing company serving international markets as well as an inside perspective of the company’s history from members of the company’s founding family: The students arrived on a day when Herman G. Rowland Jr., managing director of Jelly Belly Candy Company Thailand, and Herman G. Rowland Sr., chairman of the board of Jelly Belly Candy Company, were at the plant.

Students raved about the experience. “It is terrific to see the concepts you learn in class really applied in day-to-day use, and how they would actually be used on the ground,” one said. Others added that hearing directly from the company owners was a great experience.
