Poe Email Server Issues

| February 12, 2015

On Monday, Feb. 9, Information Technology discovered that the poe email server had been compromised. As a result, users with email accounts on poe have reported email missing from their inboxes. IT is currently working to replace the server and restore as much lost email as possible.

It has been determined that the compromised server could pose a threat to the Webster network, therefore poe will be taken offline for several hours until the new server is ready. There are 7,800 users on the poe server. During the outage, these users will not be able to send or receive email.

Please share this information with your colleagues. We will continue to provide updates to the University community on the IT website as new information regarding this outage becomes available. Questions can also be directed to the IT Service Desk at ext. 5995.

Update, Feb. 12: IT took the compromised server offline for security purposes, built a new email server, and transferred accounts from the old server onto the new server. Users with email accounts on this server may now send and receive mail again. Inbox email was restored to poe users from the most recent backup process that occurred at approximately 12:00-2:00 a.m. Wednesday morning. Users will find this recovered inbox email located in a separate folder labeled Inbox-021215 . Email residing in inboxes between 2:00 a.m. Wednesday and 3 p.m. Thursday cannot be recovered. If you continue to experience further problems with email, please contact the IT Service Desk.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
