Webster University

Each year Webster University’s commencement in St. Louis, where the University was founded in 1915, brings together graduates and their families from Webster campus locations around the world.

Webster University’s 96th Commencement ceremonies take place May 9, 2015, in St. Louis at the historic The Muny outdoor amphitheater in Forest Park. Mark your calendar and plan to be a part of the biggest event of the year full of Webster tradition and, this year, some new features.

Notable Schedule Changes

The format of the day’s activities will be the biggest change this year. The general ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. (a half hour earlier than in previous years.)

Following the general ceremony, the individual school and college recognition ceremonies will take place on satellite stages around the Muny grounds.

Commencement Speaker

Jenifer Lewis ’79, the St. Louis-born actress, singer, community activist and Webster University alumna (BA Theatre Arts, ’79), will address an estimated 12,000 Webster graduates and guests. Lewis will receive the Doctor of Humane Letters for her career accomplishments and many international community engagement efforts, most notably as an AIDS activist and mentor to children and as a Human Rights Campaign Ally for Equality.

For this commencement during Webster’s centennial year, four additional individuals will be recognized with honorary degrees along with Lewis during Webster’s commencement ceremonies.

Alma Mater

The new alma mater will be performed at the General Commencement Ceremony, celebrating 100 years and counting for the Webster University Centennial.

An Alma Mater Contest was held, open to Webster University faculty, staff, student body and alumni. The selection will be decided by the overall quality of the lyrics and music, with particular attention to the appropriateness of the lyrics reflecting Webster’s mission, vision and values. In the event that fewer than three submissions are found to be acceptable either by the Team, or by the University, the Contest may be extended and deadlines adjusted accordingly.
