The Electrical Customer Substation will be located on the south side of Garden Avenue and east of the existing parking garage.

A new construction project, the Electrical Customer Substation, will be the center of discussion at two Jan. 28 community information meetings on Webster University’s Webster Groves campus. Above is a rendering of the planned Electrical Customer Substation.

The two informational meetings will inform the community of construction that could impact the Webster University community during the Spring Semester of 2015 and the 2015-2016 academic year.

Both meetings are open to the public:

  • Jan. 28, 2015, 3:00-4:30 p.m., Emerson Library, Conference Room 120
  • Jan. 28, 2015, 6:00-7:30 p.m., Emerson Library, Conference Room 120

The Electrical Customer Substation will be located on the south side of Garden Avenue and east of the existing parking garage.

While the construction is expected to cause some short-term inconveniences for area drivers and pedestrians, it will have long-term benefits to the community by reducing the University’s electrical usage and freeing up electrical loads on the electrical grid for use by the surrounding Webster Groves Community. Currently, the area’s electrical system is at capacity, restricting growth in the area.

The construction work is scheduled to begin the first week of February pending the City of Webster Groves’ approval and weather permitting. New electrical cables will be installed in previously installed subsurface ductbanks and bored conduits throughout the campus; existing electrical transformers and electrical switchgear will be replaced at several of the campus buildings; a new masonry screen wall will be constructed on the south side of Garden Avenue east of the parking garage to provide a visual and security buffer to the new electrical equipment; and landscaping will be installed as a buffer around the substation enclosure walls and electrical transformers.

The Electrical Customer Substation is scheduled for substantial completion in August of 2016.
