Separated by 1000 miles in mainland China, Webster University China MBA students in Shanghai and Chengdu recently celebrated graduation day on the same weekend.

Julian Schuster, Webster’s provost, senior vice president and chief operating officer, officiated at both graduations flanked by two different teams of Chinese administrators and professors as new graduates friends and family looked on.

The Saturday group in Shanghai, Jan. 10, 2015, were members of classes at Webster-Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE). Across the country the next day in Chengdu, Schuster was again ready to confer degrees to Webster MBA graduates in the partnership program with the University of Electronic Science and Technology China (UESTC).

Among Schuster’s remarks to the graduates:

“You had the talent the first day you arrived here, but you’ve honed and developed that talent with the help of your professor and fellow classmates. As a result, you’ve become more capable, confident and comfortable. You’re more reasoned, resourceful and flexible.

“With these skills you have the ability to pick out what’s important to society, consumers and markets.  You can synthesize, conceive and draw conclusion for you, your company and your country.”

In addition to visiting with graduates and families and Webster faculty and staff, Schuster also conducted business with these key partners in China before returning to St. Louis in time for the Jan. 15 Spring Convocation.

One development was the launch of a new joint Webster-SUFE Alumni Association which will ensure jointly operated events for alumni of the Webster/SUFE Joint MBA Program.

Another, as Schuster mentioned at convocation, and as professor and UESTC vice president Xiong Caidong proclaimed during his remarks to graduates and guests: Webster University and UESTC have penned a new 10-year agreement, which was accepted and ratified by the China Ministry of Education.
