RAWdance Master Class

A RAWdance Master Class was held in preparation for the Spring Concert in April.

Webster University’s Department of Dance in the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts hosted San Francisco-based RAWdance company for a week long choreography residency, which included an audition and master class.

The residency was held Nov. 10-17. The audition and master class given by RAWdance co-founders, Wendy Rein and Ryan Smith, were held in preparation for Webster University Dance Ensemble’s Spring Concert.

“RAWdance was the first of three guest artists the Department of Dance will have the magnificent opportunity to host this season,” says Beckah Reed, Webster University Dance Ensemble artistic director. “The work set by RAWdance company co-founders, Wendy and Ryan, challenges the dance students artistically and exposes them physically to a collaborative contemporary dance work that will premiere in our spring concert.”

About RAWdance

RAWdance creates technical, athletic works driven by human interactions and cultural phenomena and presents them in unexpected public spaces as well as the theater. The company has performed in major metropolitan cities throughout the U.S., as well as in Singapore and China.

In 2010, the company was awarded a Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange (CHIME) award. During Smith and Rein’s residency at Webster University, a contemporary dance piece was be choreographed and set on Department of Dance students, who were cast by Rein and Smith after the audition held on Nov. 10.

“The dancers at Webster not only have impressive technical facilities and voracious appetites for movement, they also have wonderful openness in creating and collaborating. The work they will be performing in April was sparked from this generosity in the studio,” Rein quotes. “The work looks so strong after one week of rehearsal, we can’t wait to see it transform and expand as they prepare for the concert!” Smith adds.

Spring Concert

The contemporary dance piece set by RAWdance during the choreography residency will be performed by the Webster University Dance Ensemble in the Spring Concert April 17-19 at the Loretto-Hilton Center in the Browning Mainstage Theatre.
