SLSO associate concertmaster and violinist Heidi Harris is part of the Webster University Chamber Orchestra’s 2014-15 opening program.

The Webster University Chamber Orchestra returns to the stage on Sunday, Sept. 28, to open the 2014-15 concert season. (Note: This is a change from the original date of Oct. 5.)

Conducted by Paul G. Davis and graduate conductor Steve Patton, the orchestra will begin the concert with Sinfonia II, by Felix Mendelssohn when the prodigy composer was only 12 years of age.

Also on the program is Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8. Dvorak is well-known for elegant and soaring melodies that are reminiscent of his Slavonic heritage.

To close the evening, the orchestra will be joined by violin soloist Heidi Harris to perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto Op. 64. Composed at the end of Mendelssohn’s life, it represents a mature Romantic character and is recognized as a hallmark of the violin repertoire.

Heidi Harris is the associate concertmaster for the Saint Louis Symphony, having been a member of the SLSO for 18 seasons, as well as three seasons with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Harris has soloed extensively, as well as given recitals in the U.S. and Europe in such venues as the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, and the Mozarteum in Germany.

Her most recent concerto appearances have been with Leonard Slatkin conducting, in performances of Bartok’s Violin Concerto No. 2, and with David Robertson conducting, in performances of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4, both with the STL Symphony.

Admission is $3, and free to students, faculty and staff with ID. The performance begins at 7 p.m. in the Community Music School of Webster University. For more information, visit
