Webster University Men’s Soccer Team came in second in the SLIAC coaches’ preseason poll for 2014

Webster University men’s soccer team begins their quest for a third consecutive SLIAC title as they open play at home Aug. 29 at the St. Louis Soccer Park against Rhodes College. The Gorloks finished 8-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2013, tying Westminster and Fontbonne Colleges for the title, and 14-4-3 overall. It was a second straight title for Webster, as it won the SLIAC outright with a 6-1-1 record in 2012.

Webster was picked second in the SLIAC coaches’ preseason poll for 2014, just being nosed out by Westminster. The Gorloks had 73 points and three first place votes, while the Blue Jays had 78 points and seven first-place nods.  Webster lost the 2013 SLIAC Tournament championship, 2-1, to Westminster in Fulton, Missouri.

The men’s soccer program is consistently one of the top in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Over the past eight seasons, the Gorloks have finished first four times and have also advanced to the NCAA Championships three times. The Gorloks ranked as high as fifth in the region in 2013 and finished with the top winning percentage in the Midwest Region against Division III opponents. This year’s schedule will once again be a very challenging one. The Gorloks will play Wartburg College as well as traditionally competitive squads Washington University, Illinois Wesleyan University, and Edgewood College.

The Gorloks will host Rhodes on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. and Edgewood the following night, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m
