Webster University’s centennial celebration is just around the corner, and Thursday afternoon saw the first public sign of nearly a year of planning.

Though the official kickoff happens this fall, the official centennial flag was raised in front of Webster Hall on the home campus in Webster Groves, where the institution was founded in 1915.

Webster University alumna and former trustee Elizabeth Robb, who is Centennial chair, raised the flag with President Beth Stroble and Provost Julian Schuster.

Robb welcomed a gathering of community members for the brief ceremony and thanked the members of the Centennial Planning Committee, who have been working since last fall to plan the celebrations ahead. Members of the campus’ facilities crew also attended, having sculpting the grounds in front of Webster Hall to create a beautiful space for the flag.

“Planting a flag is a tradition to mark great achievement, from mountaintops to the Moon,” Stroble said. “We are here to mark 100 years of achievements at Webster and to celebrate 100 more.”

Schuster said the flag is a symbol of “100 years of students pursuing their dreams, and a testament to the leaders, staff and most importantly the faculty helping our students achieve their goals.”
