[Updated] Underground Boring Work for Electrical Substation

Approximately one mile of new underground electrical ductbank with manholes and more than three miles of conduit extending from the electrical customer substation will be installed.

As work continues throughout the summer and early fall in preparation for the new electrical substation, the community will be updated on progress and any temporary impact on the home campus in Webster Groves. Updates follow below, with the most recent update at the top:

Updated Oct. 10, 2014:

On Oct. 8, 2014, Castle Contracting completed horizontal boring and installation of the underground conduits which are a part of the electrical distribution system for the electrical customer substation. Oct. 13-22, (weather permitting), Castle Contracting will install, connect and backfill these manholes:

  • #6 (north of the East Academic Building and adjacent to Lot L)
  • #7 (south of the Priest House and east of Lot K), #8 (north of the Thompson Music Building)
  • #8A (north of the Thompson Music Building and along Big Bend Blvd.)
  • #8B (north of the Offices of the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and along Edgar Road)
  • #12 (in the west quad north of the University Center and south of Emerson Library)

During this time, Castle Contracting will also install sod or seed and straw in all the locations where the landscaping and grounds were disturbed due the installation of the electrical distribution system.

From Sept. 26 – Oct. 3, Castle Contracting is executing the horizontal boring from manhole #8B (located in the grass area on the west side of Parking Lot J at the wall along Edgar Road) to the existing manhole located in the grass area between Sverdrup and Edgar Road.

Underground Boring and Manhole Installation Work for Electrical Customer Substation’s Electrical Distribution System

Sept. 22 -26, Castle Contracting will be executing the horizontal boring from manhole #8A (located in the northwest corner of the front lawn of the Thompson Music Building along Big Bend) to manhole #8B (located in the grass area on the west side of Parking Lot J at the wall along Edgar Road).  During the above mentioned dates, the horizontal boring between manhole #8 and manhole #8A will also take place.

Underground Boring and Manhole Installation Work Near Lot K and Thompson Music Building

Sept. 15 – 19, 2014, Castle Contracting will be locating the existing underground utilities in Lot K and the front lawn of the Thompson Music Building. The execution of the horizontal boring from manhole #7 (located at the east side of Lot K by the walk leading to the H. Sam Priest back patio) to manhole # 8 (located in the southwest corner of the front lawn of the Thompson Music Building) will also take place during the above mentioned dates.

Underground Boring and Manhole Installation Near Lot K, Lot L near EAB and Pearson

Sept. 2 – 5, Castle Contracting will be completing the horizontal boring from manhole #5 (located along the east drive of the East Academic Building) to manhole #6 (located due north of Lot L North near the south patio of the Pearson House) and to the East Academic Building. The locating of existing underground utilities and the horizontal boring from manhole #6 to manhole #7 (located at the east side of Lot K by the walk leading to the H. Sam Priest back patio) will also be starting during the above mentioned dates.

Friday, Sept. 5, the drive along the east side of the East Academic Building leading to Lot L North will be closed from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. for the installation of the new manhole #5.

During trench work between July 7-25, lots on the southeast of campus will have restricted access.

During trench work between July 7-25, the garage and parking lots on the southeast of campus will have limited access, with entry and exits managed by flagmen.

Updated July 30, 2014:

During the week of Aug. 4-8, Castle Contracting will install Manhole #3 (in front of the Multicultural Center) and Manhole #4 (replacing the existing manhole at the corner of Garden Avenue and Hazel Avenue). Boring will continue from Manhole # 4 to Manhole #9A (located at Hazel Avenue adjacent to the Opera Theatre Building). Castle Contracting will provide flagmen to assist with traffic control.

Updated July 25, 2014:

During the week of July 28 through Aug. 1, Castle Contracting will be continuing the boring along the south side of Garden Avenue from the newly installed manhole # 2 (in front of the Garden Park Plaza) to manhole #3 (to be installed in front of the Multicultural Center), and to the transformer on the west side of the Garden Park Plaza. Boring will continue from manhole #3 to the existing manhole at the corner south of Garden Avenue and west of Hazel Avenue.

Updated July 2, 2014:

On Monday, July 7, 2014, Castle Contracting will start excavating an open trench and excavate and install Manhole No. 1 (MH1). Four (4) five-inch (5”) electrical conduits will be installed in this trench, encased in concrete, and backfilled. This scope of work is located on the south side of Garden Avenue from the location of the Electrical Customer Substation at the northeast corner of Parking Lot O to Manhole No. 2 located in front of the Garden Park Plaza Parking Garage and directly across from the East Academic Building’s east drive.

The scheduled completion date is Friday, July 25, 2014.

The entrances to the Parking Lot O, Nerinx’s Lot, Lot E, and the entrance to the Garden Park Plaza Parking Garage will be partially blocked with one accessible entry lane. The contractor will have personnel (flagmen) to help vehicles entering and exiting the lots and garage.

Underground Boring Work June 27-July 9

Castle Contracting will start hydro-excavation work to locate existing utilities between the west side of the West Facilities Building and to the east side of Loretto Hall on Wednesday, June 25, with an expected completion on Friday, June 27. Boring will start on Monday, June 30, at the West Facilities Building going to Maria Hall and Loretto Hall with an anticipated completion on Wednesday, July 9.

The contractor will have personnel (flagmen) to help direct pedestrian traffic as necessary. One (1) handicap parking space will be relocated to the north end of the center row of Lot D to give the contractor adequate site access for boring.

Underground Boring Work June 17-25

Castle Contracting will start boring from the area by the sand volleyball court (south side of Visual Arts Studio) to the northwest corner of the University Center on Tuesday, June 17. This work is scheduled to finish June 25.

Underground Boring Work for Substation to Begin

Castle Contracting will start the underground boring and installation of manholes for the electrical customer substation on Wednesday, June 4. The Department of Facilities Planning and Management will manage this work.

The first boring work will be from the east corner of East Hall along the back of the building to the electrical transformer.  The second boring will be from the east corner of East Hall down Hazel Avenue. The duration of these borings is expected to be 13 days.
