Like the Event Itself, Webster Participation in Vienna Marathon Grows

For decades, Vienna has been host to its City Marathon. In 2014, more than 40,000 people participated, a new record.

Runners signed up to participate in the full 42 kilometer marathon or the shorter, half marathon and relay races. Even those who chose not to run still enjoyed themselves by cheering on friends and family, while taking part in a huge and festive event. To the runners’ advantage, the weather turned out to be perfect conditions; not too warm and not too windy.

This year for the first time, Webster University Vienna was represented by four relay teams. Depending on their stamina and training, the team members could choose between 16.1, 5.7, 9.1 and 11.3 kilometers. Sounds good in theory and worked well in practice, particularly on that Sunday, April 13: The weather was not too warm and not too windy.

The only things that sometimes stand in the way of a (quasi-)marathon triumph are nature and higher forces. People sometimes get sick, and they did on this day. So the Webster Vienna participants had to switch, exchange and make last-minute adjustments – the kinds of changes that the organizers don’t want the runners to make. (But in Austria, there are ways of getting around official policies.)

All of our student and faculty runners did a great job. Afterwards, everyone celebrated at Café Landtmann, a few hundred meters past the finish line. The afternoon ended with a toast to an even more successful Vienna City Marathon 2015.
