Professor Debbie Stiles celebrates mile 20 of the St. Louis marathon.

The Webster Wellness Mindful Miles Marathon event concluded with a celebration during the week of April 28. During the month-long event, more than 150 Webster University students, faculty and employees across the nation committed to walk or run a total of 26.2 miles between March 17 and April 27.

Out of those that committed, 65 reported completing the marathon, recording 4,147 miles.

Top mileage went to Jim Gallogly, accounting assistant, with 454 miles; Debbie Stiles, Multi-Disciplinary Studies faculty, with 249 miles; and Brian McElyea, Jacksonville Metro adjunct faculty,  with 223 miles. Each received the grand prize of a FitBit One Wireless Activity and Sleep tracker.

Other winners of a FitBit One from the random drawing from those who reached at least 26.2 miles were: Ted Hoef, associate vice president & dean of Students; Heidi Vix, Electronic Resources librarian; and DeLyle Bowen, communications coordinator, Academic Affairs.

Remembering Hanson, Sandler

The milestone had special significance for Stiles, a longtime professor in the School of Education. In 1982, she finished her first St. Louis marathon along with recently deceased Webster staff member Gail DiBernardo Hanson and the late professor Art Sandler. During a recent marathon, Stiles honored Hanson, wearing a shirt with “26.2” and Hanson’s name on the back.

“I feel as though my dear friend Gail did my last St. Louis marathon with me, in spirit,” Stiles said.

Keep Going!

The Mindful Miles Marathon was sponsored by Webster Wellness, Webster Staff Alliance and the student organization, Tau Sigma. Mindful by Sodexo provided the inspiration for the name of our spring program. Anyone can continue with our GorlokStrong group on My Fitness Pal and also use it to find nutrition information on the food served in Marletto’s.

Congratulations to all those who committed to be more mindful to move over these last 6 weeks – now keep going!  And stay tuned for next year’s March 17 kick-off!
