Web Enhancement with Canvas: August Webinars and Open Labs

The Faculty Development Center continues to offer webinars for faculty who plan to use the new Canvas-powered WorldClassRoom (formerly Blackboard). We invite faculty members who would like an orientation to enhancing their class with these new and easy-to-use tools to attend our webinar offerings in the month of August.

August webinar offerings feature Expand Your Classroom, a four-part series designed to help instructors learn how to use Canvas on every level of the web-enhancement spectrum — from posting a syllabus to creating and grading assignments — and even facilitating group projects. The sessions can be attended in any order, as the offerings fit your schedule. Additionally, we are offering open labs during the two weeks prior to the start of the semester. Detailed descriptions of each webinar and registration information are outlined below.

Note: Faculty members teaching fully online classes will participate in separate training events hosted by the Online Learning Center.

Expand Your Classroom: Plagiarism Prevention & Turnitin

This hour-long webinar provides a basic understanding of plagiarism prevention, as well as a demonstration of how to use Canvas’ integrated Turnitin feature.

Learn to:

  • Understand different types of plagiarism
  • Understand why students plagiarize
  • Understand basic steps for preventing plagiarism
  • Enable Turnitin in an assignment created in Canvas
  • View a Turnitin report from a student’s perspective
  • Grade an assignment that was submitted through Turnitin in Canvas

Expand Your Classroom: Share & Organize Course Materials

This hour-long webinar shows you how to use Canvas to share resources with students and organize your course to save time in your teaching routine, including how to post the syllabus, view the class list, and post course notes in Canvas.

Learn how to:

  • Post your syllabus in Canvas
  • View your class list
  • Use the Canvas calendar to post important course dates
  • Post downloadable files for students to access
  • Post course resources using Canvas’ wiki Pages
  • Organize course materials into easy to find modules

Expand Your Classroom:  Communicate & Collaborate

This hour-long webinar shows you how to use Canvas to communicate with your students and how to facilitate and encourage collaboration among students outside your traditional classroom.

Learn how to:

  • Use email in Canvas with external email accounts
  • Keep your students up to date between classes with Canvas Announcements
  • Set up the discussion forum in Canvas as a peer review platform or to continue the discussion outside of class
  • Post course material using Canvas’ integrated audio/video recording and uploading tools
  • Facilitate group projects outside of class using Canvas
  • Leverage the convenience of GoogleDocs, EtherPad and Social Media tools to communicate with your students outside your traditional classroom

This hour-long webinar shows you how to use Canvas to assess your students’ learning and improve efficiency in grading assignments, exams and quizzes, and to track student progress in your course.

  • Create an assignment and enable Turnitin plagiarism detection
  • Add a rubric to an assignment
  • Grade an assignment with the Canvas Speedgrader
  • Create a quiz in Canvas
  • View and use your gradebook in Canvas
  • Track student progress using Canvas’ built-in analytics feature

Canvas Open Labs

Two-hour open labs are offered during the two weeks prior to the start of Fall semester for instructors who wish to prepare web-enhanced portions of their courses in Canvas. FDC staff members will be on hand to assist. Come in any time during the two-hour session; seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  Download this Web-Enhancement Preparation Guide to help you prepare your course materials in advance; please bring all electronic course materials with you to the lab.  Lab sessions are offered on the following dates/times:
