Faculty Led Short-Term Program Proposals Due June 30

| June 12, 2013

Reminder:  The deadline for Spring Break 2014 programs is June 30, 2013.

Faculty led short-term study abroad programs enrich the curriculum by taking learning to new dimensions outside the classroom and the country.  These programs are designed to promote cross cultural competence, disciplinary scholarship and/or foreign language acquisition. They allow participants to understand the world around them by immersing them in other languages and cultures.

The learning experiences afforded by these programs help support the University’s mission of transforming students for global citizenship and individual excellence. Education abroad programs inspire and inform students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to effectively engage with local and global communities and become culturally perceptive citizens. They are also a necessary alternative for students who cannot accommodate international year-long or semester programs thus increasing participation and providing access for more students, including those traditionally underrepresented in study abroad.

Members of the Webster faculty are invited to plan and propose these short-term programs by integrating study abroad with campus curriculum, programs and activities. The programs can be: a) faculty-led immersive and intensive courses in an international setting, or b) hybrid programs that combine online work with immersive travel learning. The programs have to be safe, affordable, academically rigorous, and culturally challenging, and cover a wide range of disciplines

Past short-term faculty-led program have included travel to:

  • Europe: Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Spain, United Kingdom (England and Scotland), Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Turkey (Istanbul);
  • Africa: Namibia and Rwanda
  • Asia: China, Japan, and Thailand
  • Central America: Costa Rica
  • South America: Brazil
  • United States: Orlando

The deadline for submitting proposals for international short-term courses (hybrid or otherwise) to the Office of Study Abroad with travel during Spring Break 2014 is June 30, 2013.

NOTE: Schools and Colleges may have earlier deadlines. Faculty should check with their corresponding department chairs and/or the office of their deans in this regard.

PROPOSALS: All proposals must be endorsed by the submitter’s Department Chair and Academic Dean. If the course is to be cross-listed with another department, that department’s chair and dean must also sign off on the proposal. Proposed courses must carry a minimum of 3 credit hours.

Complete proposals shall be delivered to the Office of Study Abroad, Sverdrup #207, 470 E. Lockwood, St. Louis, Mo., 63119.
