‘The Journal’ Student Newspaper Wins MCMA Awards

Webster University’s student newspaper, The Journal, won a number of awards in this year’s Missouri College Media Association (MCMA) awards competition. Bob LaRouche, adjunct professor, Electronic and Photographic Media, School of Communications, was recognized as Adviser of the Year, and the following awards were received:

  • 1st place – Best Overall Newspaper
  • 1st place – Sweepstakes
  • 1st place – In-Depth Reporting for coverage of Webster Groves City Council ordinance 8753
  • 1st place – Haley LukeMultimedia; 2nd place Feature Writing and Multimedia
  • 1st place – Josh SellmeyerSports Page; 2nd place – Sports Column
  • 1st place – David Nash - Feature Photography and News Photography
  • 1st place – Brittany RuessSports Photography and News Photography; 2nd place – News Photography; 2nd place – Page One Design; Honorable Mention – Page One Design and Feature Photography; Missouri Photojournalist of the Year (for the second year in a row)
  • 1st place – Victoria Courtney – Information Graphic and Story Illustration; 2nd place – Story Illustration
  • 2nd place – Dan BaumanPage One Design; 3rd place – Investigative Reporting
  • 2nd place - Megan FavignanoPage One Design
  • 2nd place – Josh CoppenbargerMultimedia
  • Honorable Mention – Dan DuncanNews Photography
  • Honorable Mention – Tim DotySports Reporting

The Journal was also recognized as the best in their field and also competed against the big schools, with Brittany Ruess placing first in the feature photography category of this year’s SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards for Region 7. Reuss also had a photo place third in this division. Josh Sellmeyer earned second place for a sports column and third for a sports page layout. Dan Bauman placed third in investigative journalism, and Kavahn Mansouri won second place in two categories for his work for the Montage.

Last Friday Josh Sellmeyer won one of the most prestigious undergraduate awards at Webster, the Capstone Award for Leadership. This marks the second straight year a Journal editor has received one of the top leadership awards. Andrea Sisney, 2011-12 editor-in-chief, also won the Capstone Award. Finally The Journal’s website was a national Pacemaker award winner.
