Webster University Great Decisions program

Hellinger kicked off the 2013 Great Decisions series in February.

Over 100 Webster alumni, friends and community members registered for the 2013 series – the highest attendance in the series’ history.  Great Decisions is the Foreign Policy Association’s (FPA) public education initiative to create more informed and engaged citizens by bringing people together to discuss U.S. foreign policy and global affairs issues.

Each year, the FPA selects eight global topics and provides a briefing book with additional information on each topic. The Webster University Alumni Association is one of many Great Decisions sponsors throughout the nation.

Former faculty member Mary Mangan, SL, introduced Great Decisions to Webster alumni in the late 1980s as a life-ong learning opportunity for alumni. The Webster Alumni Association continues the tradition in conjunction with Dan Hellinger and the World Affairs Council. Hellinger annually recruits Webster faculty and guests to serve as speakers for each topic.

The series began as a small discussion group of about a dozen people and has grown over the years to attract a larger number of alumni and guests.

Presenters and topics this year included:

  • Dan Hellinger: Future of Europe
  • George Gyader: China in Africa
  • Kelly-Kate Pease: Humanitarian Intervention
  • Lindsey Kingston: Myanmar & Southeast Asia
  • Amanda Rosen: Threat Assessment
  • Kelly McBride: Egypt
  • Tahmineh Entessar: Iran
  • Kyle Haynes: NATO
  • Raul Rodriguez: Cuba Today
