Legal Studies Presents Black History Month Discussion Feb. 20

| February 18, 2013

In honor of Black History Month, the Legal Studies Department invites you to join a brown bag discussion, “Beyond the Emancipation Proclamation: Jim Crow – Slavery By Any Other Name,” Wednesday, Feb. 20, noon – 1 p.m., in the Emerson Library Conference Room.

Jan. 1, 2013, marked the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, which abolished slavery and the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments were ratified to give the newly freed individuals the rights they had been denied.

However, these newly free men and women would face racial violence and a segregated caste system that found expression in the laws and institutions of the Jim Crow South.
