RecycleMania 2013

For the second year in a row, Webster University will proudly participate in the nationwide RecycleMania Tournament at competition level.

RecycleMania is a contest with more than 600 colleges and universities competing to recycle the most material on their campuses. This year, Webster added reporting for two waste stream categories: organics and electronics. The competition lasts from Feb. 1 to March 31.

This is a great opportunity to help the University meet the challenge and also increase personal involvement in recycling.

On Monday, Feb. 4, and Friday, Feb. 8, the Webster University Recycling program will host a RecycleMania Kick-Off Event in Marletto’s Marketplace from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Stop by for information about the competition and the recycling program, pick up some eco-friendly freebies and sign a pledge to commit to recycling year-round.

All who sign the recycling pledge will be entered in a drawing for a basket of organic treats courtesy of Cornucopia cookware store in Kirkwood. The basket will include coffee, jams and cheese mixes valued at $25.

The recycling program will host a weekly contest on the Webster University Recycling Facebook page. Those who share the “RecycleMania Standings” post — uploaded at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, starting Feb. 13 — by Friday of each week will be entered into a drawing to win great prizes.

Other events to celebrate the competition include:

  • A free screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary film Waste Land: Feb. 9, 2 p.m., Moore Auditorium, co-hosted with Slow Food STL. Director Lucy Walker tells the story of artist Vik Muniz and his work with the Jardim Gramacho, the world’s largest garbage dump, and the “catadores,” those who search the heaps for recyclable materials.
  • Almost There! Half-way Point Celebration: March 1, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Sunnen Lounge, to celebrate the halfway point of the Recyclemania competition and see Webster’s national standing. Free food, music, giveaways and entertainment from Saint Louis County’s Recycling Becomes Me program. This event is co-hosted with WSES.
  • Recycle and Swap Friday: March 8, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Sunnen Lounge. Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose – bring any gently used, unwanted items (anything from clothing, books and home ware to electronics and appliances) and swap them for something you might need, or just come to browse the selection. All items left at the end of the day will be taken to a local Goodwill. Early collection points for items to be announced.
