Webster University’s Vienna campus co-sponsored a conference on cultural diplomacy Nov. 29-30, on the 10th anniversary of the Austrian Cultural Forum (ACF) New York’s move into a spectacular new building designed by Raimund Abraham.

The ACF New York has presented an ambitious program which proved hugely successful with regard to visitor numbers, media echo, and international attention. But the conference addressed if and how national cultural diplomacy, in times of increasing international networking beyond the nation state and supranational governance, can remain relevant.

Thus, the anniversary of the ACF served as an occasion for a critical analysis of external cultural policies – and, in fact, many speakers uttered serious doubts on their adequacy and timeliness.

The conference received coverage in Austria’s Der Standard newspaper.

Read more about the conference at the Webster Vienna website, including observations from conference participants Maria-Regina Kecht, academic coordinator at Webster Vienna, and Martin Fritz, lecturer in the Webster Vienna art department.
