CMS Weekend Events: Young Composers Concert, Music Faculty Recital, Workshop

Winning compositions from the 2012 Young Composers Competition will be performed by professional musicians in concert on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. in the Community Music School (CMS) of Webster University.

Music by guest composer, Zack Browning, will also be performed. The Irish Times said Browning is “bringing together the procedures of high musical art with the taste of popular culture.”

The CMS Young Composers Competition, sponsored by Arden and Harry Fisher, recognizes and supports the work of outstanding young composers in two categories: Level I for students ages 12-16 and Level II for students ages 17-21.

Compositions to be performed include:

Level One (12-16 years of age):
1st Place, Michael Parsons from Stirling, N.J., for Event in a Room
2nd Place, Stuart Ross Carlson from Dexter, Mich., for Life Dance

Level Two (17-21 years of age):
1st Place, Jack Hughes from Reston, Va., for Spectrum
2nd Place, Wesley Devore from Centennial, Colo., for The Charge of the Light Brigade

In addition to the concert, the CMS will host a weekend of composition activities:

  • Friday, Nov. 30, 7 p.m. – The Webster University Department of Music Composition Faculty Recital kicks off the weekend’s festivities.
  • Saturday, Dec. 1, 1 p.m. – Workshop on Copyright and Self-publishing; 3 p.m. – Open Rehearsal with Zack Browning, guest composer; 7 p.m. – Concert of winning compositions
