Community Music School of Webster University alumna Shelby Nugent is featured in the article “From Waterloo, Ill., to ‘From the Top,’ Shelby Nugent discovered the world with her French horn,” in the Sept. 5, 2012, St. Louis Beacon.

On Saturday, Nugent performs on “From the Top,” a program that airs on National Public Radio featuring young classical musicians.

Nugent is an alumna of the CMS PREP program. The artistic director of PREP, Vera Parkin, played a role in Nugent’s selection for the radio program: Nugent had sent in recordings to the show last fall and never heard back.

When a quartet from PREP appeared on the show after winning a competition, Parkin mentioned Nugent’s entry, prompting producers to listen to her recordings and invite her to appear.

In the Beacon, Nugent reflects upon her first introduction to the French horn as a fifth grade band student, reflecting, “It opened up a completely different world for me. There were so many things that were so close to me that I didn’t realize before I picked up the horn.”
Nugent’s performance on “From the Top” will air locally at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 on St. Louis Public Radio.
