What To Do: On-Campus Safety Tips, Resources

| August 30, 2012

Webster University’s home campus in Webster Groves, Mo., is situated within a safe community with relatively low crime rates. Still, it is important to know that the success of the University’s crime prevention program lies not only with institutional efforts to minimize criminal activity on campus, but also with students and employees taking ownership of their personal safety and becoming fully informed about the range of resources available to them in the event of many types of campus incidents.

The Office of Public Safety web page offers a variety of information to educate employees and students on safety, from tornado and fire response to what to do if an armed or hostile intruder enters a building or classroom.

The University has also implemented several tools to help make the Webster Groves campus the safest possible place to learn, live and work.

Campus Safety Tools

IP Phones — Most classrooms and all buildings are equipped with IP telephones, which, in an emergency, may serve as a bullhorn to issue live announcements by university officials to the campus community. The phones may also be used by anyone in an emergency situation by dialing Public Safety at ext. 6911.

Text/E-Mail Emergency Alerts — Regardless of campus location, employees and students may sign up to receive a text message and e-mail notification in the event of an urgent or emerging incident, ranging from inclement weather and campus closures to true campus emergency situations. Building Security Systems — Buildings are equipped with strategically located closed circuit television cameras, burglar alarms and doors have card access entry.

Outdoor Security — Several “blue light” telephone kiosks are located on parking lots and a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week, year-round escort service is offered by Public Safety officers to patrons wishing accompaniment across campus. Public Safety officers also conduct 24-hour campus patrols.
