The ninth annual Susan Polgar Girls’ Invitational taking place at Webster University this week is garnering a lot of publicity, including “The girl-power gambit” today’s cover story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Read online version here.

Each girl participating in the event received a letter from Mo. Governor Jay Nixon with his congratulations forĀ  earning a spot in the invitational, “the most prestigious all-girl chess event in the country.”

Webster Groves mayor Gerry Welch proclaimed July 24 “Susan Polgar Girls’ Invitational Day” in Webster Groves.

“As St. Louis becomes a global center for chess activities and competitions, Webster University should be commended for bringing the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence (SPICE) and the nation’s #1 ranked collegiate chess team to Missouri,” Nixon says.

“Webster’s SPICE program provides the opportunity for young women to excel in this ancient game of strategy, which has important links to other types of learning such as science, technology, engineering and math.”

Rounds two and three take place today from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., respectively.
