Opera Theatre’s production of “Carmen” has received rave reviews from critics and audiences. A video featuring audience reactions from opening night, is featured on the OT website: http://www.opera-stl.org.
Here are some excerpts from the St. Louis press about the production:
“Hometown mezzo-soprano Kendall Gladen has a familiarity with “Carmen” that showed in her excellent grasp of the character. A charismatic figure, she commands the stage effortlessly… vibrant, with a dark, smoky tone. Tenor Adam Diegel’s hunky Don José was strong enough in every way to stand up to Gladen’s formidable gypsy. He’s got a big voice and a solid characterization… Soprano Corinne Winters was a notably spunky Micaëla, singing with beauty and intelligence. Bass-baritoneAleksey Bogdanov’s Escamillo was near-ideal…”

“…an opening night beyond anything I expected… and proceeded to punch us in our guts and our hearts with its several tragedies and to thrill us with the glories of its music… this “Carmen” was given an ovation that meant something, one that not only stood up but also arose and seemed to levitate as well… this production is to be reckoned gold-star significant.” – The Saint Louis Beacon
