Virus Alert: What To Do

| June 12, 2012

Information Technology has identified a virus outbreak affecting Webster computer desktops. The virus mimics a diagnostic tool and presents as a pop-up dialog box during connection to the Internet. The example reported had a title of “S.M.A.R.T. Repair,” although titles sometimes vary. (See the example on the IT News page.)

If you receive an unfamiliar pop-up claiming to have identified a system error, DO NOT click anywhere in the dialog box, not even the “X” button to close the box. Clicking the box could, in fact, cause additional malware or viruses to download to your computer. Instead, immediately call the IT Service Desk at 314-968-5995 (toll-free 866-435-7270) to report the virus. Desktop Services personnel will contact you to arrange a time to remove the virus from your computer.
