The Pieterskerk is where Pilgrims met before setting sail for the New World.

On Saturday, May 12, Webster University’s campus in Leiden celebrated its 2012 commencement with 71 students, including 35 undergraduates and 36 graduates.

Faculty paraded through the streets of Leiden in caps and gowns, following the route from Webster to the Pieterskerk.

There they joined the graduates’ family and friends from all over the world as they celebrated in usual Webster style: with flags and fanfare, music and a personal word for each and every graduate.

His Excellency Mr. Abdullah Alshaghrood, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the Netherlands, delivered the commencement address and came away very impressed by the ceremony and the personal attention paid to each student.

There’s something just right about an American university celebrating the launching of young people into the world at the Pieterskerk, where the Pilgrims met before setting sail for the New World.
