Spotlight: Graduate Finds Stronger Voice via Webster MSN Program

May 2012 was a banner month for Suzanne Wells.
Not only did she receive an M.S. in Nursing degree, she also was installed as the 2012-13 president of the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing (AAACN) during the group’s annual meeting in Orlando, Fla.
Wells, who manages the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Answer Line, said that Webster’s M.S.N. program has added balance to her managerial experience and knowledge. (She chose the Nurse Leader focus for her graduate studies.)
“My graduate education has also greatly strengthened my ‘voice’ as a registered nurse,” Wells said. “After getting to know the faculty during my B.S.N., Webster was the only program I considered for my graduate degree.”
Although a member of AAACN since 2001, Wells said her active involvement in the association for the past seven years has helped advance her leadership skills. She recalled that in 2009, she was asked to fill in for another’s term on the AAACN board of directors just as she made the decision to return to Webster University for her master’s degree.
“I decided that these two opportunities were coming to me at the same time for a reason,” Wells said, “that I should pursue both, and I did.
“It has been not just good karma, but great karma.”
AAACN is the only specialty nursing association that focuses on excellence in ambulatory care. Membership is open to nurses and other professionals interested in ambulatory care and telehealth nursing, as well as to corporations and individual corporate representatives.
