An eight-run fifth inning propelled the Webster University baseball team to a 11-5 win over Washington University in the opening round of the NCAA III Regional at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn., on May 16. Webster advances in the winners’ bracket and will play the victor of the DePauw University (Ind.)/Emory University (Ga.) contest, at 7 p.m., on May 17.
A Tom Henke (SR, Lindbergh HS, Mo.) two-run homer over the 360 mark, scoring Taylor Stoulp (SO, St. Mary’s HS, Mo.) who reached on a lead-off walk, led the barrage in the fifth. The home run was Henke’s seventh, and the runs batted in were his 43rd and 44th. After two hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases, a fielding error and three straight singles plated five more runs. A sacrifice fly by Henke, his 45th RBI, ended the scoring.
Webster grabbed a 2-0 lead to start the game as outfielder Mike Rainbolt (JR, Kankakee CC, Ill.) and 3B Mitchell Bonds (JR, Kankakee CC, Ill.) each drove in a run with two-out singles. The Gorloks had missed a golden opportunity in the fourth to break open the game as they loaded the bases with no outs and failed to score.
David Mueller (SR, Westminster Christian Academy, Mo.) started and as the recipient of the ample run support, got the job done as he allowed nine hits, two walks, and three earned runs, while striking out four in six innings of work. He earned the win, improving to 8-2 on the year.
After Ryan Martinez (JR, Illinois Valley CC) was ineffective in relief of Mueller to start the seventh, Steve Dooley (JR, Florissant Valley CC) came on and pitched three scoreless innings for his sixth save of the season.
Rainbolt was three for three with an RBI, and a run scored. Stoulp wound up three for five with two RBIs and a run scored, and Kevin Kojs (SO, Lincoln Way Central HS, ll.) was three for five as well, with two runs scored and an RBI.
Webster is 32-12 on the year and awaits its opponent for the May 17 matchup at 7 p.m.
