Three Department of Music students were winners at the three-state regional annual competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing this past weekend. Webster’s music program was represented by four faculty members, three accompanists and 18 students among the 265 who entered.
Emma Sorenson, a junior vocal performance major, won first place in her division. Rebekah Norris, senior music major, and Colby Dunn, sophomore music major, each placed third in their divisions. A further five students were named honorable mention after two rounds of competition. Fifteen of the 18 students advanced past the first round.
“This is an extraordinary showing, especially when considered against much larger and prolific programs in Illinois and Iowa,” says Jeffrey Carter, department chair. Faculty members in attendance were Carole Gaspar (voice area chair), Martha Hart and adjunct professors Amanda Taylor and Debby Lennon.
