SLIAC Players of the Week Clint Carder and Alex Cupp

Webster University men’s soccer players Clint Carder and Alex Cupp were among the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selections for its final Fall 2011 Athletes of the Week. Carder and Cupp were chosen for their play during the week of Oct. 24-30. This was the fourth selection as POW for both Carder and Cupp in their two seasons as Gorloks.

Carder, a junior from DeSoto High School, was named the Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Carder, a 5-10 forward, led the Gorloks offensively in Webster’s 2-0 victory at Blackburn College, a game that both teams needed to win to gain entry into the SLIAC Tournament. Carder set up Webster’s first goal, at the 68:46 mark of the second half, with a cross to teammate Agustin Villalba (JR, American School, Ecuador). Villalba scored to put Webster ahead 1-0.  Carder then secured the victory with a goal of his own, at the 81:43 mark, marking his sixth goal of the season.

This was Carder’s second selection in 2011. The SLIAC Co-Player of the Year in 2010, Carder also was selected twice in the 2010 season.

Alex Cupp, a senior from Lutheran South High School, was named the Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. This is the third time in 2011 that Cupp has earned the honor.

Cupp played all 90 minutes in goal, recording the shutout in a 2-0 win over Blackburn College that secured a spot for the Gorloks in the 2011 SLIAC Tournament.  Cupp had an exceptional first half, making several sprawling saves and tallying seven of his nine total saves for the game.  The shutout was Cupp’s third of the season and lowered his goals-against average to 0.97.

Congratulations to Clint and Alex on their selections!
