Five Webster University students and faculty mentor Roy Tamashiro traveled through Japan this summer on an ASIANetwork-Freeman Foundation Student-Faculty Research Fellowship. We interviewed Japan’s young adults on how they viewed the issues related to the March 11 disasters.

This presentation reviews the results of the research and our observations of the disaster’s dramatic impact on the psyche of citizens across Japan. The compelling and emotional conversations and interviews led to — not only exchanging email address and Facebook “friendings” — but also to mutual empathy, camaraderie and feelings of solidarity between the American student researchers and the Japanese youth.
