For 11 months they circled the globe, immersed themselves in countless cultures and took their education beyond the classroom so they could also learn from the world. Last week the travels and hard work of Webster University’s Global MBA and Global IR students paid off when the Class of 2011 commenced in Geneva, Switzerland.

Commencement speaker Fons Trompenaars, an author, educator and leading expert in cultural diversity, urged the Class of 2011 to use their newly honed knowledge and international experience to lead across cultures. Trompenaars said that today’s organizations need “servant leaders” who can help their work teams reconcile dilemmas for better performance. “We need a new paradigm for leadership that goes beyond culture,” he said.

The ceremony hosted by Robert Spencer, director general of Webster’s European campuses, was the first of its kind to include all of Webster’s global graduate students and included addresses by both Dean David Carl Wilson from the College of Arts & Science and Dean Benjamin Akande from the Walker School of Business & Technology.
