Heat Warning: Tips to stay healthy and safe

With another heat wave hitting the St. Louis campuses and temperatures nearing the high 90s in multiple regions North America, Suzanne Maddox, RN with Webster’s Student Health Services, shares the following tips and reminders about dealing with extreme heat.

As Maddox says, this information is vital to know “when seconds count. A heat emergency can turn deadly quickly. Knowing what to do until help arrives can save a life!”

For those who must work or play in the heat:

– Take frequent breaks
– Drink water or electrolyte solutions such as Gatorade (which helps replace important electrolytes lost in sweat)
– Wear loose fitting and light colored clothing and pay attention to their body by watching for the symptoms listed below


Heat Exhaustion
Muscle cramps

Heat stroke

strange behavior
inability to drink
red, hot, dry, skin (may stop sweating)
Shallow breathing

What to Do

– CALL PUBLIC SAFETY at ext. 6911 or 314-968-6911 (on the Webster Groves campus).
– Move to the shade if possible
– Loosen tight clothing/if able to drink – give sips of sports drink or water
– Sponge with cool water and fan

    Thank you for writing this up however the information presented had some errors. Under heat exhaustion the list of symptoms should have ended with dizziness. Shallow breathing and seizures are indicative of heat stroke. My apologies for any confusion in the way the original information may have been received. Thanks, Suzanne
