Marbles Gallery to Exhibit Photography by Theresa Marshall ‘91

The work of photographer Theresa Marshall (BA, Photography, 1991) chronicling the fall of the Berlin Wall will be on display Nov. 9-30 at Marbles Gallery in St. Louis — 20 years after the historic wall came down.

Marshall spent three years in Berlin serving as a sergeant in the Armed Forces when she witnessed —and documented — the fall of the Berlin Wall.  It was an event met with tearful and jubilant crowds gathered all along the wall to celebrate the end of the Cold War. “Pieces of Berlin” offers a historical visual and intimate look at Marshall’s personal experience.

Marbles Gallery will host an opening reception for the exhibit from 6 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 9, the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Marshall will attend the opening reception and speak about her experience at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The following is from Marshall’s artist statement:

The images not only show the trueness of the Wall’s existence but the people and the places that surrounded it; images of hope and beauty, of life and love, of children dancing in a courtyard or a solitary woman pausing in a city of international éclair. But they also depict a past of despair and sadness and indifference, of immigrants begging and eastern block Trabants left abandoned on the side of the road. You’ll see life within a city from my eyes through your eyes.  And perhaps your eyes will widen to the depth of others.

My goal was merely to document what I saw in a city that has become very close to me. Not only because it is and will always be a part of my history but because of how its history became a part of me.

Upon graduation from Webster University, Marshall worked with a corporate photographer in Philadelphia, PA. She eventually created tm photography and returned to St. Louis where she continues to shoot professionally in and around the St. Louis metropolitan area.
