Students Should Sign Up for Webster Alerts

September 30th, 2010

The active shooter incident in Texas this week should be a call to action for students to sign up for Webster Alerts. On September 28, a gunman wearing a ski mask and brandishing a rifle ran across the campus at the University of Texas at Austin and fired several shots in the air before entering a library and taking his own life, sparking a campus-wide lockdown and fears that a second shooter may be on the loose. Webster Alerts is a campus alerts service that keeps students up-to-date on the latest campus information. Webster University has partnered with e2Campus to offer this service FREE to students, faculty, and staff. Using this service, Webster sends out text messages and/or emails containing emergency announcements and weather-related school closing information when necessary. Although optional, students are strongly encouraged to sign up for Webster Alerts.

Unfortunately, only a small percentage of our student population has signed up for Webster Alerts. The process is simple and takes just a few minutes. No spam will be sent. Students can sign up to receive the types of alert that they wish to receive: either emergency or weather-related campus closing alerts, or both.

Why should a student sign up for Webster Alerts?

  • Text messaging is more reliable in emergency situations when communication systems reach high capacity. Text messages will get through when phone calls won’t.
  • You will receive alerts anywhere, even when you do not have access to a computer.
  • You will have the assurance of knowing that should an emergency occur you will be notified immediately
